The Illinois Springfield baseball team secured a 13-11 victory over Maryville on Tuesday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field, extending its winning streak to eight games. The Prairie Stars improved to 17-10 on the season and now hold an 18-16 advantage in the all-time series against the Saints.
Game Recap
- UIS starter Brayden Mayer allowed two runs in the first inning before handing the ball to Kannon Walker in the second. Maryville extended its lead to 7-0 in the inning, scoring five runs—two of which were charged to Mayer—before UIS was able to escape the frame.
- The Prairie Stars responded in the bottom of the second, cutting the deficit to four with a home run from Mack Clark.
- The Saints tacked on another run in the third before UIS made a pitching change, turning to Jake Uber. Maryville also made an adjustment, and both pitchers settled in to slow the scoring.
- UIS erased the deficit in the fourth inning, tying the game at 8-8. Ty Hollandsworth led off with a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch, and scored on a Nate Bingman single. After a walk and a hit-by-pitch loaded the bases, Mark Kattula delivered a bases-clearing double to even the score.
- Jacob Goss took the mound in relief but allowed multiple baserunners via walks. Quinn Hoftender replaced him and ended the inning with a flyout.
- UIS took its first lead of the game in the fifth when Mack Clark reached on an error with two outs, allowing Kody Morton to cross the plate for a 9-8 advantage. Maryville quickly responded with a two-out RBI single to tie the game at 9-9.
- In the sixth inning, UIS plated two runs on four hits, including a leadoff double from Jackson Blemler and three singles. An error helped extend the rally as the Prairie Stars took an 11-9 lead. However, Maryville answered again with a double, single, and an error to knot the game at 11-11.
- Jack Tobin entered in the bottom of the seventh and shut down the Saints, recording a strikeout and a popup to keep the score level. In the home half of the inning, UIS reclaimed the lead when Blemler scored on a bases-loaded walk, making it 12-11.
- Tobin continued his dominance in the eighth, striking out two more batters. Hollandsworth added insurance in the bottom of the inning with a leadoff home run, pushing the lead to 13-11.
- Tobin sealed the victory in the ninth, retiring the side in order to cap off a flawless outing, sitting down all eight batters he faced. He earned the win, striking out four over 2.2 innings.
