UIS Softball Triumphs Over Rockhurst in Doubleheader

The Illinois Springfield softball team had strong performances in both games of a doubleheader against Rockhurst on Sunday, securing a 4-3 victory in the first game and a 4-0 shutout in the second.

GAME ONE | W, 4-3
  • Rosie Bartletti was effective to start in the first game of the day, getting through three innings without a Rockhurst run.
  • The game's turning point came in the third inning when UIS took advantage of a series of mistakes by Rockhurst's defense. An RBI single, followed by a wild pitch and an error, allowed the Prairie Stars to score four runs in the frame. The early lead proved to be enough, as the defense and pitching staff held off Rockhurst's late attempts to rally.
  • Bartletti earned her ninth win of the season with a strong seven-inning outing. Despite allowing eight hits, she struck out 12 batters and gave up just two earned runs to secure the win.
  • Rockhurst threatened in the later innings, scoring one in the fourth, two in the sixth, and adding a home run in the seventh, but the Prairie Stars kept the Hawks from completing a comeback.
  • The UIS offense was powered by Koral Keehner, who had a standout performance, going 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
GAME TWO | W, 4-0
  • In the second game, UIS put on an excellent defensive performance, blanking Rockhurst 4-0. Taylor Zawacki dominated in the circle, allowing just five hits and striking out six. The win, which was her second of the season, was a complete-game shutout.
  • Offensively, UIS capitalized on a strong first inning, scoring three runs with an RBI single and an error. The team added one more in the fourth on a Malia Bender groundout.
  • Zawacki lifted the offense with a hit and two RBIs. Despite the defensive improvements from Rockhurst, UIS was able to manage five hits, holding on to its early lead to complete its first GLVC road sweep of the spring.
With the wins, UIS improved to 17-10 overall and 5-3 in the conference, continuing to build momentum as it progresses deeper into the GLVC slate.
