Baseball Splits Doubleheader to Conclude Weekend Series

The UIS baseball team split a doubleheader on Sunday to finish its four game series against the Davenport Panthers. The Prairie Stars move to 6-4 with the split series while the Panthers are now 2-6.

Game 3 Summary (L, 18-8, 7 innings)
  • Davenport went up 5-0 before UIS could respond with three runs in the third inning
  • The Prairie Stars found themselves down 8-3 in the fourth inning. DU turned to a relief pitcher and UIS failed to produce a run as three hitters grounded out and one was left on base after being hit by a pitch
  • The Panthers increased their lead to 12-3 in the top of the fifth, UIS began to battle back with two runs on three hits in their half of the inning for a 12-5 game with two innings to play
  • UIS escaped the top of the sixth inning without taking any damage before putting three more runs on the board
  • Davenport managed the final 6 runs of the game in the top of the seventh, an inning which UIS escaped with a strikeout by Charlie Jackson
  • UIS totaled 13 hits, including three by Mack Clark. Mark Kattula and Johnny Wendling each added 2 RBIs
  • Jacob Newman fell to 0-3 with the loss
Game 4 Summary (W, 17-7, 7 innings)
  • Jackson Blemler's leadoff triple set the tone for the series finale. Mark Kattula grounded out for Blemler to score and UIS started with the lead
  • A five-run inning by Davenport followed and UIS turned to pitcher Jack Winterbauer who escaped the inning with a pair of strikeouts
  • Three extra-base hits resulted in three runs in the bottom of the third inning to put UIS back in it
  • The Prairie Stars added four runs in the fourth and nine in the fifth to lead it 17-6
  • UIS hit home runs in three consecutive innings starting in the third, but Brant Vanaman's grand slam in the bottom of the fifth inning was the highlight of the 17-7 win
  • Jack Winterbauer went three innings, striking out four to improve to 2-0
