Prairie Stars Women’s Soccer Opening Weekend Recap

The University of Illinois Springfield women's soccer team met two in-region opponents on the road over the weekend, drawing twice to start the season 0-0-2.

UIS vs. Tiffin
Five Prairie Stars combined for 14 shots, including six by Carolyne Mathenia. Sierra Cenek, an All-GLVC and All-Region returner for the Prairie Stars put together the first goal of the game with the assistance of Madison Grandys. Grandys is the school record holder for her 2022 performance of eight assists in a single season.

Tiffin sophomore midfielder Sarah Gundler put Dragons on the board in the 33rd minute to level the score.

UIS outshot Tiffin 10-3 over the second half but could not come away with another goal. Starting goalkeeper Allison Mirimanian went the full ninety minutes and recorded two saves as the Prairie Stars opened the season with a draw. The teams are now 1-0-3 all-time.

UIS vs. Findlay
UIS and Findlay were nearly even in terms of shots when they met on Saturday. The Stars made eleven attempts, including eight on-goal while nine of the Oilers' ten shots were on target. Neither team could break the 0-0 deadlock in the first half.

The Oilers put fresh legs on the field early in the second half and used the momentum to score. UIS trailed by one until sophomore Anna Schurz scored the second goal of her career from 30 yards out to tie the game up at 1-1.

McKenna Gahagan quickly followed with a shot of her own that was ultimately blocked by the Oilers' goalkeeper.

The Prairie Stars remain ahead in the all-time series at 2-1-1.
