Volleyball Drops GLVC Opener to Maryville Saints

UIS volleyball fell 3-1 to the Maryville Saints in St. Louis on Friday Night.

Eirini Glynou established herself early with two consecutive kills for the first two points. Maryville responded with a run of 14-2 before UIS could regain its bearings. The comeback effort started too late as UIS fell 25-12 in the first set. 

UIS came out strong with a 6-2 start in the next stanza and carried that effort through to win by a three-point margin.

The third set was a much more even affair, one with six lead changes between the Prairie Stars and the Saints. Maryville went on a 4-1 run to lead 20-16 in the later half. The gap was nearly closed by the Prairie Stars in a sequence of one kill, a Saints attack error, and a Haley Allen service ace. Maryville was able to keep UIS out of it and win the set 25-22.

The Saints started the final set with two attack errors followed by two kills. UIS did not lead again from that point but tied it at 14-14. Six Maryville kills and five UIS attack errors would end it in the favor of the Saints. 

Eirini Glynou led with 19 kills while Gabriella Ricci had 17. Ricci pulled off a double-double with her contribution of 13 digs. 

Erica Sledge recorded her sixth double-double this fall in a defensive effort that included 38 assists and 14 digs.

The Prairie Stars will meet the Missouri S&T Miners at 3 p.m. in Rolla, Mo. on Saturday.
