The No. 19 University of Illinois Springfield baseball team made an early exit from the Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament after losses to William Jewell and Maryville. The Prairie Stars await an at-large bid to the 64-team NCAA Division II Baseball Tournament.
UIS vs. WJC (L, 13-3)
The Prairie Stars' first tournament game was a back and forth battle through seven innings. William Jewell scored first, but UIS took the lead in the second inning on a 2 RBI single by
Raul Ortega. The Prairie Stars would score their final run of the game in the fifth inning when
Brandon Bannon and
Brant Vanaman hit back to back doubles. UIS left six on base after that point and gave up seven runs in the top of the ninth.
Chad Saner pitched through six innings, throwing 103 pitches and allowing two earned runs.
Braden Roesch fell to 3-1 with the loss when the William Jewell Cardinals scored twice more.
UIS vs. Maryville (L, 10-2)
The 2-seeded UIS Prairie Stars and 3-seeded Maryville Saints met in an elimination game on Friday after being upset in the first round. The Saints put up three runs in the first inning and one in the second while keeping UIS off of the board through six innings. UIS attempted to battle back in the later innings but was outhit 16-7.
Zach Dillman entered the lineup in the top of the seventh and singled in the bottom of the inning for
Peyton Dillingham to score the Stars' first run. The next two batters flied out to leave one on base.
Brant Vanaman made an aggressive offensive effort in the bottom of the 8th, stealing second and scoring the team's last run of the game. UIS batters struck out just twice in this matchup, but flied out 13 times.
GLVC Freshman of the Year
Adam Brouwer fell to 7-2 with the loss after pitching the first four innings. The 10-2 loss effectively eliminates UIS from the chase for the GLVC Championship title.
The NCAA selection show will air on NCAA.com on Sunday, May 14 at 10:00 p.m. central. 64 teams will be selected to compete in Regional rounds, with each region split between two campus sites, before the advancing teams meet at the Super Regional. Quincy, UIS, and Maryville were atop the Midwest Region in that order in this week's final ranking.
Nationals will take place June 3-10 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, N.C.
