The University of Illinois Springfield softball team picked up one of its biggest wins of the season on Sunday after splitting a doubleheader with fifth-ranked Indianapolis. The Prairie Stars defeated the nationally-ranked team 2-1 in the first game, but they fell 9-1 in game two.
Â
The first game was a pitching battle between UIS's
Payton Long and Indianapolis' Kenzee Smith. The two pitchers gave up just a combined seven hits in the game, and struck out 10 batters.
Â
Long's one mistake came in the top of the fourth when she gave up a solo homer for the game's first run. She only allowed one hit after that to keep the Prairie Stars in the game.
Â
In the fifth, UIS took advantage of a two-out error by Indianapolis to take the lead. That error was followed by a walk, and then
Danielle Dennis cleared the bases with a two-run double to left field. That proved to be the game-winner, with neither team scoring the rest of the way.
Â
Indianapolis scored six times in the second and third innings in game two, which helped the Greyhounds get a split in the GLVC doubleheader.
Carly Chovanec had two hits in game two, and she scored the team's only run on a sacrifice fly by Dennis.
Â
UIS won its 20th game of the season in game one, and it is now 20-12 on the year, 4-8 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars will be back in action at LOLJOS next Saturday against Quincy.
