The UIS Prairie Stars and Maryville Saints women's soccer teams faced each other in the 28th annual GLVC Women's Soccer Tournament final. The Saints won by a score of 2-1 to become GLVC Champions for the first time. The 2022 Women's Soccer GLVC Tournament final between UIS and Maryville was a special one, as there would be a first-time champion no matter the outcome.
Emily Tully assisted Abby Dellamorte in the team's lone goal in the second half. It was Dellamorte's sixth goal of the season and eighth in her career.
Prairie Stars women's soccer started their tournament run by advancing for the first time since 2017. They then won over Lewis in the quarterfinal round to advance to the semifinal for the first time ever, then took down UMSL in the semifinal by two late goals. It was a historic postseason run for the program.
In her statement, Head Coach
Erin Egolf expressed pride in her student-athletes and the journey they've been on this season. "The growth the team went through was enormous!" said Egolf, "Our main goal at the start of the season was to compete at a high level and finish in the top eight of the GLVC. We were able to do that and much more thanks to the work rate, commitment, and buy in of all of the players. This team broke so many records and wrote themselves into UIS Women's Soccer history. The student-athletes on our team are more than deserving of the successes they achieved this year, the senior leadership was phenomenal, and the bar has been set high."
UIS women's soccer finished the season fifth in the GLVC despite being ranked 11th in the 2022 GLVC Women's Soccer Preseason Poll. The fall 2022 season surpassed the 2021 result in which they had a 7-7-2 overall record and 5-7-1 conference record. UIS women's soccer had a winning percentage of .575 with an overall record of 10-7-3, and a 7-4-1 conference record for their second-best season all-time.
