The University of Illinois Springfield men's tennis team competed at the ITA Regional Championships over the weekend in Michigan. The Prairie Stars had their most successful showing at the event with strong singles play across every bracket.

In the top "A" draw, UIS comprised half of the semifinal field with Tomas Martinez and Menno Servaes both reaching the final four among the top tennis players in the Midwest Region. Martinez won his first four matches, including three victories over seeded players. He dropped a close semifinal match in a tiebreaker to the eventual champion. Servaes also won his first four matches, including back-to-back tiebreakers in the second and third rounds.

In the "B" draw, Zubin Omar took home his bracket championship. He went 6-0 at the event, including a dominating 6-2 and 6-2 victory in the finals. Half of his victories came in a third-set tiebreaker.

In the "C" draw, Ivan Esguerra lost his first round match in a tiebreaker, but bounced back to win his next three and win the consolation bracket. Philip Rydell also reached the quarterfinal round in that draw.

The UIS men's tennis team will be in action again next weekend at the Panther Hidden Dual in Charleston, Ill.
