Baseball Continues To Roll In Best Start In Program History

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team continued to roll on Saturday with an 18-8 victory over Missouri S&T. The Prairie Stars improved to 18-2 on the season, their best record after 20 games in program history.

UIS recorded 22 hits in the game, tying for its second-most in program history for a single game. Six of those hits were extra-base hits, including home runs by Anthony Deconcilis, Kal Youngquist, Chris Monroe, and Austin Alderman.

UIS broke the game open in the third with nine runs that gave it a 10-0 lead. Bobby Barnard started two rallies in just that inning. He led off with a walk, and UIS followed with six straight hits, and all of those runs scored. Barnard came up to the plate again with two outs and no one on. He singled, which led to another pair of runs crossing the plate.

The two teams traded eight runs after that inning, with UIS winning by the run-rule after seven frames.

Every batter in the game for the Prairie Stars got at least one hit. Nick Mayerhofer and Deconcilis each had four, and Monroe and Alderman had three apiece. Mayerhofer scored four times, and Barnard had three runs. Deconcilis had five RBI, one more than Youngquist.

Chad Saner earned the victory on the mound by going four innings in his start. He allowed four hits and one run. He struck out four and walked two.

UIS is now 14-2 in GLVC play, and its four-game sweep over Missouri S&T helped it maintain a three-game lead in the league's Green Division. The Prairie Stars continue their homestand next week with a four-game series against Rockhurst.
