The No. 6 University of Illinois Springfield baseball program split the opening doubleheader in its GLVC series this weekend with Southwest Baptist. The Prairie Stars won the opener by an 11-1 margin, but fell in game two by a 4-0 score.
 
UIS had a pair of four-run innings to win the opener by the run-rule after seven innings. The Prairie Stars' three and four hitters did most of the damage. Zion Pettigrew was three-for-four with two doubles, a homer, three runs, and three RBI. Kal Youngquist was a perfect four-for-four with a home run, two runs, and three RBI.
 
Nick Mayerhofer collected three hits and two RBI, and Chris Monrore had two hits and two RBI. Eight of the team's nine starters scored in the game.
 
Colton Hale earned the win, throwing five innings and allowing just four hits and no runs. He struck out six and walked three.
 
The Prairie Stars ran into a hot pitcher in game two as they managed just four hits and no runs. Kal Youngquist had one of the hits, extending his hitting streak to 34 games. Southwest Baptist had just six hits, but two of those were homers.
 
UIS is now 26-4 on the year and 22-4 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars and Bearcats will play two more games on Sunday afternoon.
