The University of Illinois Springfield women's tennis team clinched a spot in the GLVC Tournament on Friday after knocking off Lindenwood by a 4-3 score in St. Charles, Mo. The Prairie Stars return to the tournament for the fourth straight time despite having just four players on their spring roster.
Â
As always, Lindenwood started the game off with two singles points and a win in doubles before play even started. UIS still captured the doubles point though after
Carol Quevedo and
Franca Bucco won No. 1 doubles by a 6-2 score, and
Neha Mokhasi and
Sina Skjelstad won No. 2 doubles by a 6-4 mark.
Â
The turning point of the match came at No. 4 singles. UIS had already won No. 1 and No. 3 singles, and it needed just one more win for the team victory.
Neha Mokhasi easily won the first set, but the second set went into a tiebreaker. Mokhasi survived the tiebreaker though by a 7-4 margin, improving UIS to 10-2 on the year.
Â
Quevedo won the No. 1 singles match by scores of 6-1 and 6-1. Bucco won the No. 3 battle by margins of 7-5 and 6-2. Skjelstad won her first set, before her Lindenwood opponent came back and won the final two sets.
Â
UIS ends its regular season on Saturday at Maryville.
