Baseball Sweeps Saturday's Doubleheader Behind Strong Pitching

The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team won both ends of a GLVC doubleheader on Saturday at the UIS Baseball Field. The Prairie Stars received two great pitching performances in 3-1 and 7-1 victories over the Screaming Eagles.

On the day, UIS pitching gave up just 10 hits and one earned run. It struck out 16 and walked just six batters.

Colton Hale set the tone in the opener by going five innings and allowing just two hits and one unearned run. Clarke Davenport pitched the final four innings to earn the save. He allowed just two hits and no runs. Both of those pitchers struck out five batters apiece.

The offense got all of its runs in the first with a two-out rally. Kal Youngquist hit a RBI single to score Brandon Bannon, and an error by Southern Indiana led to two more runners crossing the plate.

In the second game, Chad Saner got the start and went four innings, allowing just one run and four hits. Cameron Leff and Tyler Horvath pitched two innings of scoreless relief, and Luke Fitton earned the final three outs.

UIS led for the entire game again after scoring three times in the first two innings. Mayerhofer had the biggest hit with a two-run homer in the second. The Prairie Stars then broke it open with four runs in the eighth. Zion Pettigrew, Youngquist, and Bobby Barnard all had two hits. Asher Bradd scored twice, and Mayerhofer, Youngquist, and Barnard all had two RBI.

UIS is now 6-1 on the season and 2-1 in GLVC play. The Prairie Stars will look to win the series against Southern Indiana on Sunday at 1 p.m.
