The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team tied a NCAA Division II single-season record in just its 14th game of the year on Wednesday afternoon at the UIS Baseball Field. The Prairie Stars hit their ninth grand slam of the season in a 13-7 victory over McKendree.
Â
According to the NCAA Division II baseball record book, the mark for the most grand slams in a season was nine set by Armstrong State in 54 games in 1988. The Prairie Stars came into Wednesday's game with seven already this year. In the fifth inning,
Brandon Bannon hit a homer with the bases loaded. Two innings later,
Austin Alderman also hit one out for the team's ninth grand slam of the year, and his third of the season.
Â
Alderman's grand slam was also big in that it broke a 7-7 tie. Two batters later,
Chris Mathieu hit his second home run of the game to put UIS by the final margin of victory.
Â
Bannon, Alderman, and Mathieu all ended the game with four RBI. Mathieu also had team-highs with three runs and three hits. Bobby Bernard was third-for-four on the day with one run. Bannon and Alderman both crossed the plate twice.
Â
UIS had a bullpen day on the mound.
Mason Coon,
Cameron Zunkel,
Cameron Leff,
A.J. Golembiewski, and
R.D. Lutze all pitched one inning of scoreless ball, and Leff earned the victory.
Â
UIS improves to 10-4 on the season. The Prairie Stars are in action again on Friday with a GLVC doubleheader at Southwest Baptist.
