The University of Illinois Springfield softball program split Sunday's doubleheader against Ferris State, and it captured the weekend series in St. Charles, Mo. by a 3-1 margin.

The two teams went into extra innings in the first game on Sunday, with Ferris State prevailing 6-5 in nine innings.

UIS trailed 4-3 in the sixth when doubles that inning by
Danielle Dennis and
Grace Harris helped the Prairie Stars take the lead. It stayed 5-4 until the bottom of the seventh, when two walks and single by Ferris State forced extra innings. In the ninth, Ferris State got a leadoff single. That runner then stole a base, and advanced the final two bases on wild pitches

Lakyn Wagoner and Franke both had two hits in the game. One of Wagoner's hits was a double, which made her the program's all-time leader with 33 doubles.
Payton Long pitched five innings, and allowed just four hits and two runs.

In the second game, UIS scored in every at-bat, including nine runs in the third and fourth inning. That allowed the team to win 11-2 in a five-inning contest.
Bree Derhake had three hits and three runs, and Wagoner had two hits, including another doubles, two runs, and two RBI.
Jillian Mathis collected two RBI and a run, and
Addison Bryant had two hits, two runs, and a RBI.

Bryant also earned the win on the mound, allowing two runs in five innings. She struck out four and did not walk anyone.

UIS will take its 3-1 record to the Lewis Dome Invitational next weekend.
