The University of Illinois Springfield softball team needed just two innings in order to earn a doubleheader sweep over William Jewell on Sunday in Liberty, Mo. The Prairie Stars ended the regular season with 2-1 and 4-3 victories over the Cardinals.
Â
In the opener, the Prairie Stars scored both of their runs in the first inning.
Calla Wickenhauser walked with one out, and
Morgan Edwards hit a homer to left center to stake UIS to an early 2-0 lead.
Â
UIS pitchers in game one were at their best when William Jewell had runners on base. The Prairie Stars held the Cardinals to just three-of-20 batting with runners on base, and stranded 12 runners.
Â
In the seventh, William Jewell loaded the bases with no out. A fielder's choice scored one run and kept the bases loaded with still no one out.
Addison Bryant got two straight strikeouts and a fly out though to get out of the jam and preserve the win.
Â
Bryant pitched three innings for the save. She allowed one run, three hits, and two walks, and struck out two.
Jaycee Craver earned the win, throwing four innings and allowing no runs and five hits. All nine batters for UIS reached base once, with a combined eight hits and one walk.
Â
In game two, William Jewell jumped out to a 2-0 lead after two, but UIS scored four times in the third to quickly regain momentum. Edwards plated two runs with a double, and then
Carolyn Franke hit a two-run homer later in the inning for a 4-2 UIS advantage.
Â
The Cardinals answered with one run in the fourth. In the sixth, they had the tying run at third and the winning run at second with one out. UIS got the lead runner out at home on a bunt, and then got a pop out to end the threat. The bad weather resumed after that, and the game was called during the second weather delay of the contest.
Â
Payton Long threw a complete game and allowed four hits and two earned runs in six innings. Wickenhauser had two of the team's five hits in the second contest.
Â
UIS ends the regular season with a 26-22 overall record, and a 15-11 conference mark. The Prairie Stars are scheduled to begin the GLVC Tournament on Thursday in East Peoria, Ill.
