The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team extended its winning streak to a season-best 10 games on Tuesday. The Prairie Stars swept a doubleheader at the UIS Baseball Field over Missouri-St. Louis by scores of 12-0 and 4-3.
Â
One of the nation's leaders in runs score,
John Sechen, set the tone early in both games. In the opener, he hit a leadoff homer in the first which sparked the team to grabbing a dominant 11-0 lead after three innings. In the second game, he scored twice in the first two innings as UIS took an early 4-1 lead. That proved to be just enough as the Prairie Stars held off a late Missouri-St. Louis rally. Sechen finished the day with five runs, and also had two RBI, three hits, and two walks.
Â
Alex Altmyer was the winning pitcher in the first game, throwing four innings and not allowing a hit.
Brendan Anderson,
Eddie Wilkins, and
Trent Sidwell all threw a scoreless inning in the scheduled seven-inning game. The pitching staff allowed just one hit.
Â
Chris Monroe had two hits, including a double, two RBI, and two runs. Sechen scored three times and had two RBI.
Brandon Bannon and
Joe LaCivita each had two hits, one run, and one RBI.
Nick Mayerhofer scored twice, and
Zach Abfall had both a run and RBI.
Â
In the second game,
Ryan Jemar earned the win, going four innings and allowing four hits and one run.
Nick Alvarado struck out the side in the ninth for the save. Sechen added two more runs, Monroe had two hits, and
Brennan Brogni had one run and one RBI.
Â
UIS improves to 30-11-1 overall. The Prairie Stars resume to GLVC play this weekend with a home series against Indianapolis.
