Volleyball Uses Long Runs To Get Past Lindenwood

The University of Illinois Springfield volleyball team picked up a 3-0 sweep on its home court on Friday night. The Prairie Stars defeated GLVC newcomer Lindenwood by scores of 25-12, 25-21, and 25-18.
 
UIS dominated the end of the first two sets to grab an early lead in the contest. In the first set, UIS led 12-11 before finishing the set on a 13-1 run.  The Prairie Stars scored the final eight points, including seven straight points while Jailyn Borum was serving.
 
In set two, UIS trailed 21-15 before going on a 10-0 run. Borum was the server again during the long run. Lindenwood had seven straight hitting errors at one point, including five straight points that were blocked by UIS's front row of Brianna Bush, Becca Blakeley, and Hannah Nicolaisen.
 
UIS's big run came earlier in the third set, with an 8-1 spurt that turned a 10-7 deficit into a 15-11 lead that would not get under three the rest of the way.
 
UIS finished the match hitting .284, compared to .043 for the Lions. The Prairie Stars had a 64 percent sideout percentage, while Lindenwood's mark was just 43 percent. UIS had 13 more kills, 17 more digs, and six more blocks.
 
Borum finished the match by serving the ball 27 times, and UIS scored a point on 23 of those serves. She had double-figure kills with 10, and also led the team with 13 digs.
 
Alli Splitt had a team-high 12 kills, and hit .409 for the match. Brianna Bush had 10 kills, a .500 hitting percentage, and she had a team-high 10 blocks. Becca Blakeley collected 33 assists, and Jenny Rush was in double-figure digs with 12.
 
UIS improves to 14-9 overall and 5-3 in the GLVC. The Prairie Stars are back in action on Saturday afternoon at 3 p.m. against nationally-ranked Missouri-St. Louis.
