UIS Knocks Off No. 9 Indianapolis

The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team knocked off the University of Indianapolis with a 1-0 victory during Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup in Indianapolis.

"The team was fantastic," UIS coach Adam Hall said. "It was a brilliant effort from everyone."

Indianapolis (6-1, 2-1) entered Friday's match ranked No. 9 in the latest United Soccer Coaches (USC) NCAA Division II poll. UIS (3-2-2, 2-0-1) picked up the program's first-ever win against a top-10-ranked team and its first-ever win against Indianapolis.

"I'm so proud of our performance," UIS defender Rory Carlson stated. "Every single one of the lads gave it their all and it showed with the result."

During the 83rd minute, Edward Rose capitalized off a corner-kick pass from Emmanuel Nhonga and headed the serve for a  game-winning goal. Nhonga earned the assist on the score.

"Again, we played as a team and it showed in the result," Rose commented. "I'm happy that I could score to win for us. It was a great ball from Emmanuel."

"It was a great win and an amazing team performance," UIS defender Daniel Kemp added. "We managed to keep our clean sheet after a class goal by Edward."

Rose's goal was UIS's only shot on goal. Thiago Fernandes and Josh Moore also provided shots for UIS. Brett Langley, James Jenkins and Ewan Lynch each registered shots on goal while Benjamin Sierra, Ben Rohder, Alejandro Steinwascher and Vincent Stone each tallied shots for the Greyhounds.

Ian Vicars contributed three shots, including one shot on target for Indianapolis.

Pijus Petkevicius recorded his third-consecutive shutout while saving each of the four shots he faced. Among UIS Division II leaders, the freshman from Vilnius, Lithuania is tied for second in single-season shutouts (3) and ranks third in career shutouts (3). At 385 minutes, 31 seconds, Petkevicius holds the longest scoreless streak by a goalkeeper in UIS Division II history.

"I'm very proud of the team to keep another clean sheet," UIS defender Terence Bynoe commented. "It wasn't an easy game, but fought until the bitter end and I'm happy the hard work paid off."

Indianapolis outshot UIS 10-3 and held a 4-1 advantage in shots on goal.

The Prairie Stars clash with Lewis University (1-3-3, 0-2-1) for a GLVC matchup on Sunday at 12 p.m. in Romeoville.

"Now, we are looking forward to playing Lewis on Sunday," Carlson said.

"This is just one step forward," Hall stated. "Now, we focus on our next test on Sunday."
