The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) baseball team released its schedule for the 2019 season on Wednesday.
UIS hosts 27 games at UIS Baseball Field after compiling a 23-1 record at the facility in 2018. The Prairie Stars open the season in a three-game neutral-site series against Saginaw Valley State University in Emerson, Ga. UIS and Saginaw Valley State clash in two games on Feb. 16 and one on Feb. 17. The Prairie Stars open the home season against Purdue University Northwest with a doubleheader on Feb. 23 and a single game on Feb. 24. UIS completes an entirely Midwest Region non-conference schedule by taking on William Jewell College in three games, the University of Missouri-St. Louis in three games and the University of Wisconsin-Parkside in four games over the course of the season.
The Prairie Stars open Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) play with a three-game series against Truman State University on March 9-10 in Kirksville, Mo. UIS will be exposed to the new single-division GLVC season, which includes a total of 33 games. The conference season includes clashing with Quincy University, Bellarmine University and the University of Southern Indiana, which all qualified for the 2018 NCAA Tournament, in three games apiece.
U.S. Baseball Park in Ozark, Mo. will once again be the site of the GLVC Tournament. The top eight teams in the conference standings qualify for the 2019 GLVC Tournament, which will be held on May 9-12.
UIS put together a historic season in 2018. The Prairie Stars went 47-9 overall and 23-1 in GLVC play to set school records in wins and conference wins. UIS followed up its first-ever GLVC East Division title with its first-ever berth to the NCAA Tournament. The Prairie Stars hit their highest marks in program history by peaking at No. 4 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) NCAA Division II poll and No. 1 in the NCAA Division II Midwest Region poll.
