The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team and Quincy University turned in a defensive draw during Wednesday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup at Kiwanis Stadium.
"What a fantastic finish for this group," UIS coach
Erin Egolf said. "They saved their best performances for these last few matches and I couldn't be happier with the heart they showed. It's never easy to end a season, but we ended the season knowing that we gave everything we had. Soccer is a heartbreaking game and the results didn't go our way, but we were in every game and these ladies never gave up. I am so proud of all of them."
During the 58th minute,
Maggie Juhlin set up
Amanda Meyer to create space upfield. Meyer created a strong chance, but Quincy's Emilee Autry came up with the save.
During the 63rd minute, Quincy's Gabby Orlando served a pass to Abby Pulliam, but her redirection went just to the right of the goal.
Sydney Gorman put a free kick from about 30 yards out on goal 71 minutes into the match for the Hawks (10-5-2, 8-3-2), but UIS's
Paloma Guijarro came up with a critical save.
Meyer recorded two shots on goals for the Prairie Stars (3-11-3, 3-9-1) while
Allison Hackett and
Taylor Mraz registered shots.
Pulliam led the Hawks with five shots. Lauren Crane contributed four shots while Alex Severino and Maddie Bauer each provided three shots. Orlando turned in two shots and Gorman added a shot.
Guijarro saw five shots and came up with five saves.
Autry saved both of the shots she faced.
Quincy outshot UIS by an 18-4 margin and held a 5-2 advantage in shots on goal.
As the Prairie Stars held the Hawks to a tie, the Hawks fell a half-game short of earning the conference title.
Mraz, Guijarro,
Jasmin Lisowski and
Kimmie Rickson each closed out their careers.
Guijarro has competed in 20 matches and started 19 matches as goalkeeper. On Sept. 18, 2017, Guijarro was named the GLVC Defensive Player of the Week, becoming the first player in program history to win any player-of-the-week recognition. Guijarro ranks third in UIS Division II history with six career shutouts. The Waukegan native also broke the UIS Division II single-season goals against average (1.04).
Mraz has competed in 64 career matches and started in 38. Among UIS Division II career leaders, Mraz is tied for fourth with six assists, tied for seventh with 16 points and is tied for ninth with five goals.
Lisowski has competed in 46 career matches, started in 13 career matches and tallied an assist against McKendree University during her freshman year.
Rickson has competed in 37 career matches and started in 16.
"I am going to miss these seniors tremendously. They are a fun, successful, motivated group and they are all going to go on and do wonderful things. It was a pleasure to coach them and see them grow as players and people. I thank them for all of the good things they have done for this program!"
The Prairie Stars are expected to bring back 19 players for the 2019-20 season, which accounts for 82.6 percent of this season's roster.
