Prairie Stars Slow Down Hawks in Second Half

QUINCY, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) earned an 81-64 victory over Quincy University during Saturday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
 
Quincy (5-10, 1-5) recorded 39 points in the first half and trailed UIS (10-4, 4-2) by one point. The Prairie Stars limited the Hawks to 25 points in the second half as UIS finished with a 17-point victory.
 
"After a sluggish start, we played well," UIS coach Mark Kost said. "I'm very proud of our poise and effort."
 
Destiny Ramsey powered to 19 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Prairie Stars.
 
Shelbi Patterson contributed 17 points, eight rebounds and seven assists. The 5-foot-9 senior guard from Indianapolis, IN drained 5-of-8 (62.5 percent) shots from 3-point range.
 
Jasmine Sangster tallied 14 points. Tehya Fortune produced 13 points. Val Meissner notched nine points and Reje Pitchford scored three points. Gabrielle Sanders and Brianna Mefford rounded out the UIS scoring effort with two points.
 
Julia Ruzevich turned in 14 points five rebounds and three steals for the Hawks. Anika Webster delivered 14 points and Taylor Hickey dished out four assists.
 
UIS outrebounded Quincy by a 45-30 margin.
 
The Prairie Stars committed a season-high 20 turnovers as the Hawks finished with a 25-14 advantage in points off turnovers. Quincy turned the ball over 12 times.
 
UIS converted 28-of-64 (43.8 percent) shots from the field and 11-of-25 (44 percent) attempts from 3-point range. Quincy knocked down 22-of-70 (31.4 percent) attempts from the floor and 5-of-14 (35.7 percent) shots from the perimeter.
 
The Prairie Stars drained 14-of-15 (93.3 percent) shots from the free-throw line while the Hawks made 15-of-19 (78.9 percent) attempts from the charity stripe.

Quincy led 21015 after the first quarter before UIS entered halftime with a 40-39 lead. The Prairie Stars extended their lead to 58-50 through three quarters and outscored the Hawks 23-14 in the fourth quarter.
 
UIS is scheduled for a GLVC rematch with McKendree University (6-7, 2-4) next Monday at 5:30 p.m. in TRAC. The Prairie Stars then engage with Maryville University (4-8, 1-5) for a conference matchup on Saturday at 1 p.m. in St. Louis, MO.
