KANSAS CITY, MO --- The Prairie Stars (8-5, 2-2) went toe-to-toe with (RV) Rockhurst (11-3, 3-1) but were outlasted in the fourth set for their first defeat in the last four matches. UIS fell in the opening set 25-14 but bounced back with the biggest win of the night with a 25-11 second set victory. Rockhurst responded with a 25-15 win and then outlasted the Prairie Stars 32-30 in the fourth set to take the match.
Up 11-6, Rockhurst used an 8-2 run to take an 18-8 lead in the first set and the two teams traded the final 10 points of the match as Rockhurst jumped out to an early lead.
The Prairie Stars responded in the second set, but not before the Hawks jumped out to a 4-1 lead. Down 7-4 UIS used a 6-0 run to take a 10-7 lead and then another 6-0 a few serves later to go up 17-9. UIS closed the second set with an 8-1 run to even the match at one, taking the second set 25-11.
The Hawks again used an early lead to take control of the third set, trading points with UIS, until a 7-1 run broke the set open.
In the fourth, the Hawks led 8-6 but six consecutive points for UIS pushed the Prairie Star lead to 11-8. Rockhurst chipped away, tying the match at 16, but UIS responded with three straight points to take a 20-17 advantage.
The Prairie Stars led 24-22 with
Lexi Hall on the serve but an error from UIS and kill from Rockhurst tied the match at 24. UIS had three set points but also fended off two of their own before Rockhurst took the final two points, ending the match at 32-30.
Jailyn Borum led the way for UIS with 11 kils while
Alyssa Hasler and
Brianna Bush added nine and
Alli Splitt eight. Hall tallied 24 assists with
Tiffany Wentworth adding 20.
Defensively, Borum led with 14 digs while
Ally Vicsik and
Courtney Schutt each added 11.
UIS will return home next weekend to face Bellarmine University on Friday night at 7:00 PM before taking on Southern Indiana on Saturday for a 3:00 PM first-serve. UIS has taken down Bellarmine three of the last four meetings and beat Southern Indiana in two of the last three.
