Saints Overcome Prairie Stars

ST. LOUIS, MO – Maryville University overcame a 1-0 deficit to top the University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team in a 2-1 victory during Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.

"We struggled to get into the game," UIS coach Erin Egolf said. "We never got a hold of the ball and we got away from our possession. Even so, we still created some chances."

Ashley Pogue and Alex Johnson each contributed goals in the second half to give Maryville (4-2-1, 3-1-1) the win.

Amanda Meyer delivered a goal and Meghan Delaney added an assist to lead the Prairie Stars (5-2-2, 2-2-1).

During the 14th minute, Maggie Juhlin took a free kick and her shot was saved by Maryville goalkeeper Alison Riddle.

The Prairie Stars took the lead 53 minutes into the match after Delaney made a cross to Meyer. Meyer chipped the keeper and netted the first goal of her career.

A minute later, Allison Verville made a cross pass to Pogue at the center, Pogue beat the keeper to the ball and recorded the equalizer.

Johnson came close to striking in the 60th minute after she fired a shot off a corner kick from Verville, but Johnson's shot was saved.

Maryville took the lead 66 minutes into the match. Catie Huesgen produced a shot that was saved, but Johnson rebounded the shot and tallied the goal.

The Saints outshot the Prairie Stars by a 12-to-9 margin.

"Credit Maryville for coming out fast and aggressive and jumping on us early."

Juhlin and Emily Matsen registered two shots on goal apiece while Meyer, Jasmin Lisowski and Karisa Rogers provided shots on target.

Paloma Guijarro saw five shots and collected three saves. Riddle sent away six of the seven shots she faced.

"I expect more from this team and they should expect more."

UIS closes out the trip to St. Louis on Sunday with a 12 p.m. conference matchup against the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL) (2-4-1, 1-4).

"We have to recover and rebound quickly for a tough game at UMSL on Sunday."
