SPRINGFIELD, IL – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) women's soccer team overwhelmed Drury University with a 3-0 victory during Friday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
"We've been preparing for this all week," UIS coach
Erin Egolf said. "We said that we need to be ready for the first home conference game. The girls came out from the first minute to the 90th minute. I'm super impressed with the way the girls came out here and played."
Karisa Rogers connected on two goals for the Prairie Stars (4-1-2, 1-1-1) while
Taylor Mraz provided a goal and an assist.
With a 4-1-2 start, UIS has put together the highest winning percentage through the first seven starts of a season in program history. The Prairie Stars are receiving dividends for their consistent annual development.
"I'm super happy with the way we played," Rogers commented. "It's great to see how we're building as a team each game."
Rogers tallied three shots on goal,
Amanda Meyer put together two shots on target while Mraz,
Erin Bolskar,
Meghan Delaney,
Maggie Juhlin and
Kaylan Mills each registered a shot on goal.
Jayde Lowe led the Panthers (3-2-1, 1-2) with two shots on target. Rachel Krueger and Molly Wheeler each added a shot on goal.
Paloma Guijarro recorded the first shutout of her career, sending away each of the four shots she faced. Drury goalkeeper Gabrielle Klingaman faced nine shots and tallied six saves.
The Prairie Stars outshot the Panthers by a 17-to-9 margin.
Mraz tore up the field 27 minutes into the contest and netted an unassisted goal.
During the 62nd minute, Mraz made an upfield pass to Rogers while Drury's goalkeeper was up. Rogers made her way around the side and found an opening behind the goalkeeper to give UIS a 2-0 lead.
Rogers scored her second goal of the match as the junior forward from St. Charles, MO fired a stripe during the 77th minute.
The Prairie Stars received contributions from a variety of players as 23 players saw action for UIS on Friday.
"Everyone, whether they started or came off the bench, gave it 100 percent and really helped us win," Mraz noted.
UIS closes out its weekend by entertaining Missouri S&T (0-5, 0-3) on Sunday at 12 p.m. in a GLVC matchup at Kiwanis Stadium.
"Missouri S&T is always a solid team, so we'll have to go out and compete," Egolf acknowledged. "I am super optimistic that if we go out and play like we did [on Friday], we're going to be hard to beat. We need to go out on Sunday and put in this kind of performance and I think we'll walk away happy.
PRAIRIE STAR NOTES: Among UIS Division II career leaders, Rogers ranks third in points (21) and goals (9)…Mraz moved into a fourth-place tie in assists (6).
