KIRKSVILLE, MO – The University of Illinois Springfield (UIS) men's soccer team pulled out a 2-1 victory over Truman State University during Sunday's Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) matchup.
UIS (2-2, 2-0) earned its second conference win of the weekend after capturing a 1-0 victory over William Jewell College (0-2, 0-2) on Friday.
"It was great going out getting two wins in our first two conference games," UIS coach
Adam Hall said. "I'm glad we managed to get the results we set out for on the road this weekend. Now we need to prepare for next week at home."
Mario Falsone recorded two goals to lead the Prairie Stars.
Adrian Ortega,
Daniel Kemp and
Alex Zarco each provided an assist.
"I'm really happy to get my first two goals of the season," Falsone stated. "I was lucky to be given two quality passes."
Ortega found Falsone open 26 minutes into the first period. Falsone had a quality look on the left side of the net and gave UIS a 1-0 lead over Truman State (1-4, 0-2).
"Mario scored with his first touch," Hall recounted. "I was delighted with his impact."
UIS attacked in transition during the 81st minute, which lead to Kemp and Zarco setting up Falsone for his second goal of the day.
With less than five minutes remaining, Truman State created a breakaway following an interception and Trevor Kaufman notched a goal assisted by Matt Yankowitz.
"I'm very disappointed that we held the 2-0 lead and let them get back into the game with their goal."
Truman State outshot UIS by a 15-to-8 margin.
Prairie Star goalkeeper
Tommy Geile saved four of the five shots he faced. Zac Suazo rejected two of the four shots he faced for the Bulldogs.
Falsone scored on both of his shots on goal. Ortega and
Javier Milla registered a shot on goal apiece.
"With the team competing like this, the season is looking very positive," Falsone commented.
