SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (27-15) grinded out their sixth consecutive win with an 18-14 win over Division III MacMurray College on a breezy day in Springfield. Illinois Springfield slugged their way to 18 runs on 21 hits, using a seven run first to take control of the game.
After MacMurray jumped on top with a run in the first,
Michael Rothmund answered with a two-run home run in the bottom half to take the lead, which was followed by an RBI double from
Will Stanka. However, the biggest blow of the inning came off the bat of
Troy Cantu, who blasted a grand slam, giving UIS a 7-1 lead.
The Highlanders closed the gap to just one in the third, scoring five runs and making the score 7-6, but UIS answered in-kind with five runs of their own. A sacrifice fly from
Drew Harper was followed by a bases clearing double from
Cole Taylor, giving UIS a 12-6 lead.
Rothmund connected for his 20
th home run of the season with a laser over the left field wall in the fifth to make the score 14-6. Stanka added a solo blast in the sixth before Harper connected for his fifth home run of the season later in the inning.
UIS took an 18-6 lead into the final inning before MacMurray plated eight runs to make the final score 18-14.
On the game, UIS totaled 21 hits --- 12 of which went for extra bases.
Austin Muench had two doubles while
Zach Patterson hit his second triple of the season. Rothmund hit his 19
th and 20
th home runs of the season while Stanka and Cantu each hit their first.
Throwing by committee,
Chase Lowman took the win for UIS, throwing two innings and allowing two runs (one earned).
Jon Laird,
Colby Carmichael, and
Trent Sidwell all threw scoreless innings for UIS before
R.D. Lutze came in for the one out save in the final inning.
The Prairie Stars will conclude the home portion of their schedule this weekend when they host Saint Joseph's. Saturday's double header will begin at 12 PM while Sunday's games will begin at 11 AM to accommodate the Night of Stars banquet later that evening. Senior day ceremonies will precede the games on Sunday.
