Ramirez Notches 100th Win with 6-2 Victory over Truman State

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Head coach Chris Ramirez reached the 100-win milestone with his team's 6-2 victory over Truman State on Tuesday. The cross-divisional non-conference game started as a pitching duel but a four run seventh inning broke the game in favor of the Prairie Stars, giving Ramirez his 100th win in just his fourth season at the helm.

The Bulldogs got on the board first in the third inning with a two-out RBI single off UIS starter, Chase Lowman. The Prairie Stars responded in the fourth inning when Kenny Hansen began a rally with a single up the middle to begin the inning. John Sechen drove in Hansen with a two-out single to center, tying the game at one.

Colby Carmichael relieved Lowman in the top of the fifth and worked a scoreless first inning before running into trouble in the sixth. A solo shot gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead but Carmichael worked around a one-out double, keeping the Bulldogs off the board and keeping the deficit at one.

After an inning ending double play in the sixth, the Prairie Star bats came alive as Cole Taylor doubled down the line off the first pitch of a new pitcher in the seventh and scored on a single from Trey Hannam to tie the game at two. Hansen drove in Hannam with a sacrifice fly to left to give UIS their first lead of the game before Drew Harper lifted his fourth homerun of the season to left field. Sechen doubled home Zach Patterson to give UIS a 6-2 lead.

The four-run cushion was more than enough for the Prairie Star bullpen, which was put on lock by R.D. Lutze, who relieved Austen Kapusinski in the seventh. Lutze came in with the bases loaded and two outs and induced an inning ending ground ball before striking out the final six batters of the game.

Michael Rothmund and Patterson led the way for UIS on offense, each recording a three-hit game. Rothmund was a home run shy of the cycle while Patterson roped two doubles on the game and scored a run.

Taylor, Hannam, Hann, and Sechen all had two hits apiece while Harper and Sechen both had a multi-RBI game.

Lowman took a no-decision in his first start of the season, throwing four innings and allowing one run on three hits and striking out five, though he did allow five free passes. Carmichael threw 1.1 innings of relieve and allowed one run and struck out two before Kapusinski and Lutze closed the game out. Lutze (3-1) picked up the win in relief, throwing 2.1 innings and striking out six batters.

In his fourth season as head coach, Chris Ramirez notched his 100th win and now owns 100 of the 130 program wins since its inception in 2011.
