SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (15-12, 5-3) got back to their winning ways in the final game of their four-game series with Southern Indiana (12-13, 5-3) when
Cole Taylor hit his ninth home run of the season, this one giving UIS a 4-3 win in 10 innings.
GAME ONE: SOUTHERN INDIANA 5, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2
In the first game of the day and third of the series, Illinois Springfield jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third when
Austin Muench scored on a pass ball and error on the catch before Taylor scored on a bunt single from
Michael Rothmund.
Adam Gregory (5-2) cruised through four innings, retiring 12 of the first 13 batters he faced. In the fifth, Southern Indiana tied the game, capitalizing on a Prairie Star error, which scored a run. In the sixth, the Screaming Eagles tacked on three more runs, using two more Prairie Star errors to aid their rally.
Illinois Springfield had runners reach base every inning but left eight stranded on the day.
Chris Mathieu and Muench each had two hits on the game, while
Trey Hannam had the Prairie Stars lone extra base hit with a double in the seventh inning.
Gregory took the tough loss on the hill, throwing six innings and giving up five runs (zero earned). The lefty surrendered just five hits in the outing before giving way to Austin Kapusinksi, who completed the seventh, striking out two.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3, SOUTHERN INDIANA 2 (10 INNINGS)
After
Brayden Jensen worked around two singles in the top of the first, UIS jumped on top with a run in the bottom half on an RBI single from Rothmund.
The Prairie Stars took their first lead of the day since the third inning of the first game on a two-out, two-run home run from
James Battley in the fourth. This put UIS up 3-0 as Jensen was in the middle of retiring 15 of the last 17 Screaming Eagles.
In the sixth, USI tied the game with an RBI single and another two-run single with two outs. Jensen threw one more inning before giving way to
Gunnar Kay, who threw two scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth.
In the tenth inning, UIS had two-outs and nobody on before Taylor connected for his league-leading 46
th hit and 36
th run, pushing UIS to a 3-2 win. The home run was Taylor's second hit of the game, joining
Drew Harper and Muench with multiple hits.
This was the first extra-inning win for the Prairie Stars this season.
Jensen started on the mound for UIS and took the no-decision after throwing seven innings, giving up three runs on seven hits. The bullpen work was phenomenal as Kay and Geraci combined to throw three innings, giving up two hits and no runs.
With the win, UIS moves into a tie with Southern Indiana for third place in the GLVC east standings as the top four make the post-season tournament.
