SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (15-14, 2-4) beat Quincy in the GLVC home opener on a walk-off hit by pitch but fell in game two to split the doubleheader. UIS won the opener 5-4 when
BriAnna Edgar was hit with the bases loaded before falling 8-4 in eight innings in the finale.
Jaycee Craver picked up the win in relief in game one but was tagged with the loss in game two.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 5, QUINCY 4
The Prairie Stars got down early in the first game as Quincy pushed across a run in the top of the first. In the third,
Ali Haesele blasted her third home run of the season to give UIS a 3-1 lead. Haesele, who started the game pitching as well, drove in
Madi Torry and
Amanda Gosbeth, who doubled and singled earlier in the inning.
In the fourth, UIS extended their lead when
Lakyn Wagoner drove in a run, giving UIS a 4-1 lead after four.
Quincy responded with two runs in the fifth, tying the game at 4-4, where it remained until the bottom of the seventh. The UIS bats went silent for a couple innings, as Torry picked up the only hit for UIS after the third inning with a single in the fourth.
With two outs and nobody on in the seventh, Haesele drew a walk on a full-count before
Morgan Edwards walked on five pitches.
Alexa Brown continued the trend with a four-pitch walk, which brought up Edgar with the bases loaded. Leading the team with eight hit-by-pitches, it's no surprise Edgar took one for the team, when the second pitch of the at-bat hit the senior, giving UIS the win.
Haesele threw 5.1 innings before giving way to Craver, who threw the final 1.2 innings, giving up just one hit and picking up her fourth win of the year.
GAME TWO: QUINCY 8, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 4 (8 INNINGS)
The second game of the night provided just as much drama, as UIS jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the third when Wagoner doubled to left, scoring Torry. This was followed by a pinch-hit double from
Allison Rose and RBI single from Edwards, giving UIS a 3-0 advantage.
Quincy struck back in the next half inning, scoring twice to push the score to 3-2 but UIS did the same, scoring in the bottom half on a single from Torry, which was aided by an error from Quincy.
Leading 4-2, UIS went to the sixth with Craver in the circle but Quincy pushed across two runs on a fielders' choice and RBI single, tying the game at four all.
UIS had runners at first and third in the sixth and then another runner on in the seventh, but couldn't push across the go-ahead run. Quincy plated four runs in the eighth to take control, scoring all four runs with two outs.
Wagoner ended the game with two triples, one in the sixth and another in the eight, giving her a GLVC leading six on the season.
UIS will host Truman State on Sunday for more GLVC action with the first pitch scheduled for
2:00 PM due to forecasted thunderstorms.
