SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (10-8) closed their spring break in dominate fashion, beating the Hornets of Harris-Stowe State University (17-9) by a score of 9-0. A combination of three UIS pitchers limited the Hornets to just one infield single on the day, facing just one batter over the minimum.
The Prairie Stars scored three runs in the second and five in the fourth to take control of the game before
Michael Rothmund put the final touches on the game in the seventh with a solo blast.
Adam Gregory was dominating from the first pitch, throwing five innings of no-hit ball, striking out five. The lefty picked up his team-leading fourth win of the season before handing the ball to
Brayden Jensen, who threw three innings and struck out three.
R.D. Lutze finished the final inning, striking out one and hitting one batter.
The lone hit came in the seventh inning on a ground ball between third and short.
Drew Harper was able to get to the ball, but was unable to make a play on the Hornets leadoff hitter.
In the second inning, Rothmund was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning and advanced on a walk to
Austin Muench.
Kenny Hansen got the scoring started when he blasted the first pitch he saw off the left center wall, scoring two. Hansen scored on an RBI single from Harper to make the score 3-0.
In the fourth, it was Harper again doing the damage, this time a three-run homerun to left field, scoring
John Sechen and
Myles Hann. It was Harpers first homerun of the season and gives him 10 runs batted in.
Trey Hannam continued the offensive outpour with a two RBI double down the left field line, scoring
Chris Mathieu and
Cole Taylor.
In the seventh, Rothmund blasted his team-leading ninth homerun of the season --- giving him 14 for his career --- making him the all-time homerun leader in UIS history.
The Prairie Stars will hit the road on Tuesday when they travel to face Quincy University for a 1:00 PM first pitch. This will be the final tune-up before conference play begins next weekend when UIS travels to McKendree for a four-game series.
