HARROGATE, TN --- The Prairie Stars finally got to play a match on their spring break trip, after having their first two matches cancelled due to inclement weather. Both the men's and women's teams faced off against Lincoln Memorial and suffered 7-2 losses. The men's team drops to 4-5 on the season while the women's team now sits at 5-4.
MEN'S TENNIS: LINCOLN MEMORIAL 7, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2
Cole Buehnerkemper and Logan Burgess-Hayes started the day off with an 8-5 victory in doubles play in the top spot. UIS was unable to pick up another victory in doubles, falling behind 2-1 early.
In singles,
Sam Clarke got the lone victory, holding a 4-0 lead in the opening set before his opponent retired. Buehnerkemper suffered the first of four three-set losses for the Prairie Stars, falling 3-6, 6-3, 10-5.
Burgess-Hayes also fell in three, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 while
David Perez suffered an even closer defeat, 6-0, 6-7, 10-8. In the sixth spot,
Grant Fitzsimmons dropped another close battle, 4-6, 6-2, 10-6.
Lincoln Memorial improved to 9-2 on the season with the win.
WOMEN'S TENNIS: LINCOLN MEMORIAL 7, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2
The women's competition started off with UIS falling in both the second and third place doubles, but saw
Jane Carter and
Sharon Danquah pick up a doubles victory 9-7.
Kena Bere and
Kaitlyn Thornhill fell 8-5 while the duo of
Danielle Mendoza and
Maegan Flight fell 8-3.
Flight was the lone UIS player to pick up a singles victory, beating her opponent 7-6, 6-1 in the fifth spot. No match went to three sets as UIS fell 7-2 and dropped to 5-4 on the season. Lincoln Memorial improved to 8-2.
UIS will return home on Saturday to face Missouri – St. Louis in a non-divisional GLVC match. The competition will be held at Washington Park with a first serve at 2:00 pm.
Last season, the men fell 2-7 while the women dropped their match 1-8.
