2015-16 Top-Ten Accomplishments: Three Programs Set Marks for Wins in a Season

SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Throughout the course of the 2015-16 athletic season, the Illinois Springfield athletic department reached a countless number of milestones, set numerous records, and achieved a level of success that hasn't been matched before by UIS athletes or teams. Over the course of the next five weeks, on every Tuesday and Thursday, we will count down the top-ten individual, team, and program accomplishments over the past calendar year, culminating with the top accomplishment on Thursday, July 28th.

When compiling the list, accomplishments on and off the fields of play were taken into account, as well as how certain events effected the department as a whole. Any event that brought favorable recognition to the department or the University were taken into account as part of the top-ten list.

#9 – Women's Soccer, Men's and Women's Tennis Set Records for Wins in a Season

The women's soccer team began the year by setting a record for wins in a season. In the spring, both the men's and women's tennis teams followed suit, each eclipsing 10-wins for the first time in the Division II era, setting a new mark for wins in a season.

In the fall, the Prairie Stars picked up their first three wins of the season, in succession, with three straight 1-0 wins, two within GLVC play. After a 1-0 win over Judson on the road, the Prairie Stars bested both William Jewell and Missouri S&T by the same score.
Later in the season, another pair of 1-0 victories against Saint Joseph's and Maryville secured not only the single season record, but also the record for wins in the GLVC.

The women's tennis team would not be bested though, as they turned in a 3-2 record in the fall before turning their attention to the spring schedule. The Prairie Stars won five of their last nine matches to secure their 11-wins, picking up their final three wins in 9-0 fashion over Illinois College, Saint Joseph's, and Blackburn. Their final record was 11-15 with a 2-4 mark in the GLVC east.

Along with their record breaking season, sophomore Jane Carter was named to the All-GLVC team for the second straight season.

The men's team turned in a 3-1 record in the fall before coming out in the spring and winning four of their first five matches, including a 6-1 defeat of Division I opponent Western Illinois. Closing the season with a win over non-divisional GLVC opponent Quincy and a 9-0 victory over Illinois College, the Prairie Stars improved to 13-13 on the year, setting a new mark for Prairie Star tennis.

Within the wins, Sam Clarke picked up a win over the sixth ranked player in the region in a match against Lewis while Cole Buehnerkemper and Logan Burgess Hayes defeated the 16th ranked doubles team in the nation against Washburn.
