SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC) announced the 2015-16 Academic All-Conference recipients, honoring 2,584 athletes, setting a league record.  Along with that, an Illinois Springfield record 89 student – athletes were named to the Academic All-Conference team, besting the University's previous high of 67 achieved last year.

Illinois Springfield had 89 student-athletes recognized, with two --- Amanda Gosbeth (softball) and Ethan Bluhm (cross country) --- earning a perfect 4.0 GPA. Counting cross country and track and field as the same team, each one of UIS' 13 teams were represented and had at least two student – athletes recognized.  Women's soccer led the way with 15 student-athletes earning the honor.  

40 student – athletes were recognized for at least the second time while Rebbecca Ramirez (women's golf), Haley Ochromowicz (women's soccer), and Paige Polonus (women's soccer) each garnered the honor all four years.

ACROSS THE GLVC
The Academic All-GLVC honor is given to any student-athlete who meets a cumulative GPA of 3.30 over two semesters at an institution. After 114 students recorded a perfect 4.0 during the 2013-14 academic year, that number improved to 118 the following year and jumped to an outstanding 179 during the 2015-16 year.

This is the first time in league history that over 2,500 student-athletes were recognized and marks a six-percent increase from last year and marking the sixth consecutive year a new best has been set.

Across the conference scope, 15 of the 18 sports equaled or increased their total number of recipients from the previous season, up from 11 a year ago. Men's soccer showed the largest increase, as 47 new players made the team.

By sport, baseball had the most honorees, as 265 players garnered the honor, up 24 from the previous year. Women's soccer had the second most with 264 while men's soccer had 231. Women's track and field and football rounded out the top-five sports with 228 and 190, respectively.
