SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars completed the weekend sweep as they took two from Wisconsin – Parkside by scores of 3-2 and 7-0. UIS (14-22, 6-12) swept both Lewis and Wisconsin – Parkside (4-29-1, 1-16-1) to extend their winning streak to four games and jump up three spots in the GLVC standings.
GAME ONE: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3, WISCONSIN – PARKSIDE 2
The Prairie Stars jumped on top early, scoring twice in the second inning.
Molly Manietta singled to center scoring
Amanda Gosbeth before
Madi Torry slapped a single to third, bringing in
Trisha Faulkner. UIS never trailed at any point in the double header, continuing a dominating weekend.
Although the Rangers tied the game in the fourth on a two-out two-run single,
Alexandria Smith settled down and limited the damage in the inning. The senior threw a complete game, surrendering just the two runs on three hits, striking out four. She walked nobody in the game and picked up her fifth win of the season.
It was Manietta that won the game for UIS, this time in the sixth inning with a one-out rope down the left field line. This scored Gosbeth, who previously reached on a single and stole second to set up the inning. Manietta collected two hits on the game and drove in two of the three runs.
GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 7, WISCONSIN – PARKSIDE 0
In a much less dramatic game, UIS dominated from the first inning.
Jaycee Craver struck out the side in the top of the first before UIS took the lead by scoring in the bottom half.
Brittany Miller scored
BriAnna Edgar and the Prairie Stars never looked back.
Craver worked around a bases loaded jam in the second, again striking out the side, recording six strikeouts in the first two innings. UIS tacked on a run in the third inning before Miller and Gosbeth went back-to-back in the fifth inning to put the game out of reach. Miller blasted a two-run shot before Gosbeth followed with a solo shot on the ninth pitch of the at-bat. It was Miller's sixth homerun of the year and Gosbeth's seventh.
Craver went the distance, throwing her third shutout of the season while striking out a season high 11 batters. This bested her previous high of 10, which she did against Blackburn in five innings of perfect pitching.
Of the nine hits UIS collected, five went for extra bases. Miller had both a double and a homerun, Edgar collected her third double of the season, while
Alexa McClaughry tripled to right center in the sixth.
NOTES: Brittany Miller had three hits in the second game, including seven total bases … Torry had a team-high four hits on the day, scoring once and driving in a run … Manietta drove in the game-winning run in the first game and had six hits on the weekend … Smith and Craver combined for 26 strikeouts on the weekend, opposed to just six walks … UIS is now 12
th in the GLVC and still has games with the four teams directly above them.
