Softball’s Second Half Surge Comes up One Game Short

LIBERTY, MO --- The Prairie Stars gave themselves a shot to make the conference tournament for the third straight season in the final week of play, but came up one game short of surging their way into the playoffs. Needing to win both games against William Jewell, UIS fell 9-1 in the opener before putting together a gutsy 2-0 victory in nine innings to close out the season.

GAME ONE: WILLIAM JEWELL 9, ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 1
The day began auspiciously for the Prairie Stars as Alexandria Smith retired the first eight batters she faced and 12 of the first 13 as UIS took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fifth. Madi Torry put the Prairie Stars ahead in the third with an RBI single, driving in Alexa McClaughry, who leadoff the inning with a single.

In the sixth, William Jewell capitalized on three UIS errors and pushed across four runs to take the lead. In the sixth, the Cardinals hit three homeruns including a three run shot and ended the game 9-1 via the run rule.

UIS had just the two hits on the game and was unable to garner any offense outside of the RBI single.

GAME TWO: ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 2, WILLIAM JEWELL 0
In the final game of the season, UIS put together one of the grittiest performances you could find. Jaycee Craver threw her seventh shutout of the season and marked the fourth time this season she went at least nine innings and surrendered less than two earned runs. The freshman righty was dominant from the start, allowing just three hits and two walks in the nine inning complete game.

On offense, UIS knocked around nine hits, but were unable to score until the ninth when Molly Manietta singled to begin the inning and came home on a double from Rachel Goff. The Prairie Stars scored again on a wild pitch to make it 2-0 but Craver was just fine, retiring the side in order in the final half inning.

BriAnna Edgar tallied two hits in the leadoff spot while Ashli King added another in the two-hole. Manietta had two hits and a run in the game, scoring the game-winning run in her final collegiate game.

The Prairie Stars conclude their season with a record of 24-26, winning 14 of their final 18 games.
