The men's and women's tennis teams opened up their spring seasons at home with two wins over Missouri Baptist. The men grinded out a 5-4 victory over the Spartans after dropping two of the doubles matches, while the women ran away with a 7-2 victory.
The men's team began the day by falling in two of the three doubles matches as
Cole Buehnerkemper and
Logan Burgess Hayes won in the top spot 8-3.
Sam Clarke and
Santiago Pedraza were defeated in a tough match 9-8 and
Grant Fitzsimmons and
Christian Timm lost 8-4.
In singles, the Prairie Stars turned it around, as UIS picked up four victories for the 5-4 win. Buehnerkemper and Clarke each won their singles matches, going 2-0 on the day. Buehnerkemper won 6-2, 6-4 while Clarke won 6-3, 6-1. Burgess Hayes won in the three spot 6-1, 7-5 and Fitzsimmons won in the five spot to close out the win 6-4, 6-2.
Pedraza was defeated 6-4, 6-1 while Timm had to retire due to injury.
With the win, UIS moved to 6-1 on the season while Missouri Baptist fell to 0-3.
In doubles, UIS fell in the top spot as
Sharon Danquah and
Jasmin Morgan fell 8-6. The
Faith Hook and
Jane Carter duo as well as the team of
Danielle Mendoza and
Katelyn Michl picked up victories though, winning 8-3 and 8-2.
Taking a 2-1 lead into the singles competition, UIS won 5-of-6 to take a 7-2 win. Danquah and Carter both won handily in the top-two spots. Danquah defeated MoBap's top player 6-1, 6-1 before Carter picked up a 6-0, 6-1 win. Morgan, Hook, and Mendoza each picked up wins, as no match went into three sets.
With the win, UIS evened up their record to 4-4 while Missouri Baptist fell to 1-5.
