Prairie Stars Take Series Finale from Rockhurst 5-4

LEBANON, IL --- The Prairie Stars and Hawks concluded a three-game series in Lebanon, Illinois on the home field of McKendree in which the Prairie Stars came out victorious, 5-4. After falling twice on Friday at home, UIS scored two early runs and then scored three of the final four runs of the game to take the series finale. Adam Gregory (1-1) picked up the win in relief for the Prairie Stars, throwing two scoreless innings.

The scoring began in the second inning when Jason Galeano drew a leadoff walk and then advanced a base on a wild pitch. Zach Patterson singled, putting runners at the corners with one out and then Aaron Kuper drove in the game's first run with a single to right field. With two outs, Trey Hannam singled to load the bases and then Patterson came in to score when Adam Warda drew a walk, giving the Prairie Stars a 2-0 lead.

Rockhurst cut into the lead in the fourth with back-to-back two out hits, the second being an RBI double. The Hawks then took the lead briefly in the fifth, knocking UIS starter Jose Marin out of the game after consecutive two-out hits scored another run. The Hawks got the go-ahead run via a wild pitch and took a 3-2 lead.

UIS didn't trail for long as Hannam leadoff with a walk and stole second, moving to third on a throwing error from the catcher. Gabriel Acevedo drove in Hannam with a double and then came into score on a double from Kenny Hansen as UIS regained the lead 4-3.

Rockhurst struck back with a run in the sixth to tie the game at four where it remained tied until the bottom of the seventh. After pitching out of a jam in the top half of the seventh, Brody McGrath singled to leadoff the seventh and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from Acevedo. A two-out single from Galeano scored McGrath and scored the eventual game-winning run.

Richard England was called on for the three out save and induced a fly out and ground out from the first two batters. The third batter struck out but reached on a wild pitch. However, the potential tying run was gunned down trying to steal, as Kuper ended the game with his third caught stealing of the season.

The win puts the Prairie Stars' record at 6-7 on the season as they have one more non-conference game next Tuesday before GLVC play begins. The Prairie Stars will host Quincy University on Tuesday before hosting GLVC opponent McKendree on Friday and Saturday in their first conference series of the season.
