FRANKFORT, KY --- The Prairie Stars (5-5) saw three balls leave the park as they finished off a two-game sweep of Kentucky State (1-8), winning 15-5 and improving their overall record to 5-5. UIS jumped out to an 11-0 lead before the Thorobreds crossed the plate, and cruised to their third victory in last four games.
UIS jumped ahead in the second when
Gabriel Acevedo doubled to lead off the inning and came in to score on a single from
Aaron Kuper. The Prairie Stars broke the game open in the third as the first five batters reached base in what ended up being a four run inning.
Trey Hannam doubled before
Adam Warda drew a walk to put runners at first and second.
Jason Galeano drove in his first run with a single before
Kenny Hansen singled in Warda. Acevedo doubled in two-runs to end the scoring as UIS took a 5-0 lead.
Warda hit his fourth homerun of the season in the fourth, a two-run shot after the Prairie Stars had already tacked on another run. After four, UIS led 11-0 and was in full control of the game.
Kentucky State scored three unanswered runs over the next three innings but
Troy Cantu connected for his first of two homeruns in the top of the seventh. Cantu would go on to hit another two-run shot in the eighth to put the Prairie Stars up 15-5.
The Prairie Stars knocked around 17 hits on the day, scoring 15 runs, their highest total of the season, topping the 12 runs they put up on opening day. Hannam, Warda, Galeano, Acevedo, and Cantu each had two hits while Cantu led the way with four runs batted in. Five different players scored two runs as well.
On the mound,
Jon Laird got his first career start and went three innings, surrendering no runs and striking out three.
Gavin Collins threw 1.1 innings of relief, striking out three and surrendering one hit.
Payton Raso finished the game, throwing a hitless final inning and striking out one.
The Prairie Stars will host Rockhurst on Friday in a doubleheader before finishing up the series on Saturday in a neutral site game at McKendree.
