SPRINGFIELD, IL --- After six hours of play, the Illinois Springfield Prairie Stars (6-2) were bested by the Hillsdale College Chargers (4-2) in a non-conference bout. In a match that came down to the final game, UIS fell in the final three matches to fall to the Chargers.
In doubles, Justin Hyman and Dugan Delp of Hillsdale bested
Cole Buehnerkemper and Logan Burgess 9-8 in the top ranked doubles match. It was the last of the three doubles matches to finish and gave Hillsdale a 2-1 lead heading into singles.
The duo of
Sam Clarke and
Santiago Pedraza picked up the lone doubles win for UIS, defeating the three and four players of Hillsdale 8-5.
Grant Fitzsimmons and newest team member Ajay Bandreddy fell 8-3 in the third doubles match.
In the singles portion, the top-three players for UIS each picked up wins, giving the Prairie Stars a 4-2 lead. Buehnerkemper won his third straight match in straight sets while Clarke picked up the most impressive victory of the day and won his sixth straight singles match. Clarke beat the 20
th ranked Dugan Delp 6-3, 7-5 to pick up his first win over a ranked opponent. Burgess Hayes won a three set thriller, coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-1, 6-4.
Heading into the final three games, UIS held a 4-2 lead but couldn't close out the win. Fitzsimmons and Bandreddy each fell in close matches while Pedraza lost in three sets, 6-3, 0-6, 6-4.
UIS lost for the first time since October but will look to bounce back as they travel to Georgia to face Emmanuel, Young Harris, and North Georgia next week.
