SPRINGFIELD, IL --- The Prairie Stars (1-0) wasted no time finding their mid-season form as they routed the Robert Morris – Springfield Eagles 12-0 on opening day in Jacksonville, Illinois. The Prairie Stars used a seven run second inning to take a commanding lead but it was an all-around dominating pitching performance that led the way.
In the second inning, Austin Muench began things with a single before Aaron Kuper followed with a perfectly executed hit-and-run, advancing Muench to third. Jake Redlinger recorded the first RBI of the season, hitting a line drive up the middle, hitting the pitcher and scoring Muench. Adam Warda got in on the action with a homerun to left field, scoring Kylee Hunsinger, who previously singled and stole second.
Gabriel Acevedo came up with a two-out double, scoring Austin Peterson before Muench reached on an error, scoring two more runs.
The Eagles had only one base runner through the first five innings, as they trailed 9-0 heading into the sixth.
Troy Cantu picked up an RBI in the sixth, scoring Patterson with a single to right field. In the seventh, UIS scored two more runs on an RBI groundout from Muench and RBI fielder's choice from Brody McGrath.
The Prairie Stars racked up 16 hits in the game from 11 different players while nine different people recorded an RBI. The pitching staff allowed just two hits on the day and walked three. However, of the five baserunners, three were picked off.
Matt Farrington started and threw three innings, striking out two and giving up one hit while facing the minimum. Chance Simpson picked up the win, going two innings, and not allowing any baserunners before Jose Marin threw the sixth and seventh innings, striking out three. Gavin Collins and Richard England finished out the game, allowing one baserunner over the final two innings.
The Prairie Stars open up their season with a win for the fourth time in their sixth seasons and will now face interdivision foe, UMSL next Saturday and Sunday in Cartersville, Georgia.
