Torry Hits Walk-Off Single; Prairie Stars Win Twice in Florida

KISSIMEE, FL --- The Prairie Stars ended their second tournament of the year by winning twice at the Citrus Classic at the ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex. They beat Queens College 4-1 on Saturday before besting Dominican College 4-3 on Sunday. The Prairie Stars are now 3-6 on the season after playing tournaments in Arkansas and Florida.

ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 4, QUEENS 1
On Saturday, the Prairie Stars wasted no time getting on the board as Madi Torry singled to lead off the game and came into score on a triple from Amanda Gosbeth. With two outs Alexa McClaughry reached on an infield single, scoring Gosbeth and putting the Prairie Stars up 2-0.

In the third, Brittany Miller blasted the second UIS home-run of the season, a solo shot putting UIS up 3-0.

The Prairie Stars tacked on an insurance run in the sixth inning after BriAnna Edgar led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Molly Manietta. Trisha Faulkner doubled to right in the next at-bat putting UIS up 4-0.

In the circle, Jaycee Craver threw a gem, notching a complete game, surrendering juts three hits and striking out four. The win improves the freshman to 2-2 on the season.

ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 3, ROLLINS 4
After the dominating victory against Queens, UIS went up against Rollins College and once again, jumped on top early. Torry led off with a walk before Gosbeth singled and Miller walked, loading the bases with nobody out. McClaughry walked, giving her an RBI and then Hannah Kain singled to left, scoring Gosbeth. Already up 2-0, Ashli King was hit by a pitch, giving UIS another run.

The Prairie Stars gave two back in the top of the second inning but still held the lead 3-2 with Alexandria Smith in the circle.

After the first inning, UIS struggled offensively, as Rollins retired 14-of-16 UIS hitters from the end of the first through the sixth.

In the top of the fifth, Rollins rallied for two runs to take a 4-3 lead, but Rachel Goff pitched out of a jam, limiting to damage by getting the final two batters to ground out.

Down 4-3 in their final at-bat, Torry singled down the left field line with one out, putting the tying run on base. However, UIS couldn't bring her around and fell 4-3.

ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 4, DOMINICAN 3
In the most exciting game of the week, the Prairie Stars battled back from two different deficits to pick up a 4-3 win over Dominican College out of New York. UIS got down in the second inning but tied things up in the third. Haley Inman began the rally with a one-out walk and stole second, setting up a Torry RBI single. Miller then cracked a double, scoring Torry and tying the game at 2-2.

Both pitchers worked in and out of jams as the game needed extra innings to complete. In the top of the ninth, with international rules in effect, Dominican plated one run and took a 3-2 lead. McClaughry was placed on second base and advanced to third on a bunt from Manietta but was picked off by the catcher during the next at-bat.

With two-outs and nobody on, Edgar doubles, putting the tying run back on second with two outs. Faulkner walked, putting the winning run on first and Inman came up with yet another clutch hit for the Prairie Stars, keeping the rally going with a single and loading the bases. This set up Torry, who already had an RBI single and a run in the game. Torry wasn't done though, hitting a walk-off single, scoring Faulkner and Edgar and giving the Prairie Stars an improbable 4-3 win.

ILLINOIS SPRINGFIELD 0, NORTH GEORGIA 8
For the second time in three days, the Prairie Stars went up against the defending national champions, North Georgia. Facing the same pitcher as they did on Friday, who is 9-0 on the season, the Prairie Stars picked up three hits in the contest from Miller, Goff, and Jordyn Larsen.

UIS hung tough, giving up two runs in the bottom of the third inning before North Georgia rallied for four runs in the fifth and tacked on two in the sixth to win 8-0.
