SPRINGFIELD, IL --- Strong doubles play once again led to a dominating victory for the Prairie Stars as they took down Division III Monmouth College 7-2 in their first home match of the season. UIS swept doubles play before winning the first four singles matches, putting the match out of reach for the Fighting Scots.
In doubles,
Cole Buehnerkemper and
Logan Burgess Hayes won in the top-spot, winning 8-4. This was the closes of the three doubles matches and
Santiago Pedraza and
Christian Timm won 8-1, following a
Grant Fitzsimmons and
Sam Clarke 8-2 victory in the third match.
Taking a 3-0 lead into singles, the top-four for UIS took care of business, clinching the match. Clarke was the first to finish, playing in the three spot, winning 6-0, 6-1 before Burgess Hayes closed his match 6-2, 6-0, clinching the win. In the top-spot, Buehnerkemper won 6-1, 6-2 before Pedraza closed out the only three set match of the day, coming from behind to win 4-6, 6-2, 11-9.
Timm and
Sean Courty both fell in tough matches in the fifth and sixth spots but not before the Prairie Stars improved to 5-1 on the season.
Their next match will not be until March 4
th when they welcome in the Spartans of Missouri Baptist, an NAIA opponent before their full schedule begins.Â
