Prairie Stars Upended in Final Quarter against UIndy

INDIANAPOLIS, IN --- Not much went against the Prairie Stars (6-9, 1-7) in the first three quarters as they took an eight point lead into the final quarter on the road against the University of Indianapolis (5-13, 3-5). However, a five-point fourth quarter led to the 60-53 defeat to the hands of the Greyhounds as the Prairie Stars were unable to keep the momentum following a weekend win over William Jewell.

A quick start helped UIS jump out to a 6-0 lead before the home team was able to get on the board. Chelsea Cross scored the first four points of the game before Syerra Cunningham pushed the lead to six. Caroline Kelty ended the quarter with a layup to extend the Prairie Star lead to 14-8, ending the first ten minutes leading the Greyhounds the whole way.

The second quarter was much of the same as UIS saw their lead grow to as much as 11 as Ashley McHenry completed an old-fashioned three-point play after just over a minute had passed in the quarter. A 7-0 run for UIndy closed the deficit to just four but the Prairie Stars answered back and ended the quarter with a 29-22 halftime lead.

Keeping their lead for the entire third quarter, the Prairie Stars increased on their lead by one, ending the third with a 48-40 lead, as they continued to dominate the Greyhounds.

It wasn't until the final quarter that the Prairie Stars ran into any trouble at all. Leading since the opening minute of the game, UIS didn't score until the 3:17 mark in the fourth quarter, when Meredith Marti hit a crucial three.

UIndy started the quarter with a 12-0 run, taking a four point lead after trailing the entire game. UIS missed their first nine shot attempts in the quarter and turned the ball over twice during the Greyhounds run. Marti's three --- one of her three on the night --- was one of just two field goals for the Prairie Stars in the quarter.

UIndy led for just 5:13 in the entire game, but it was enough as UIS couldn't regain the lead after it was lost in the fourth.

Although the Prairie Stars hit a slump in the final quarter, the Greyhounds shot an absurd, 61 percent in the second half and made 8-of-10 free throws, which sparked the comeback. UIS grabbed six offensive rebounds in the second half alone and only turned the ball over 12 times compared to 17 from their counterpart.

The GLVC's leading scorer, Princess German, was limited to just four points on 2-of-10 shooting but it was a 28 point effort from Nicole Anderson that led the charge for UIndy.

Cunningham led the way for UIS with 14 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field, while also bringing in five rebounds. Marti hit three three's for nine points while Kelty brought in a team high six rebounds. Crosss, who finished with eight points on the night, also tallied four steals in the game and blocked one shot.

UIS will try and rebound from this tough loss as they take on Saint Joseph's on Saturday with tip-off set for 1:00 pm ET.
