MACOMB, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield men's tennis team wrapped up its opening weekend at the Art Peterson Invitational at Western Illinois.
Day two saw
Cole Buehnerkemper (Effingham, Ill.) and
Logan Burgess Hayes (Brighton, England) take third place in the No. 1 Doubles flight with a win over conference foe Lewis, 8-1. Freshmen
Christian Timm (Milwaukee, Wis.) and
Sam Clarke (Kendall, England) placed sixth in the No. 2 doubles flight, while
Santiago Pedraza (Madrid, Spain) and
Grant Fitzsimmons (Springfield, Ill.) placed seventh in the third flight.
In singles play, Fitzsimmons placed second in the No. 5 flight with victories over Roosevelt and Truman. The sophomore dropped a three-set decision to Lewis, 0-6, 6-3, 11-9, in the championship match. Buehnerkemper and Burgess Hayes each finished fifth in their flights of one and two, respectively.
Clarke took third in the No. 3 singles flight with victories against Western Illinois and Lewis. Pedraza grabbed a fifth-place finish in No. 5 singles, while Timm took sixth with a win against Western Illinois.
Sean Courty (Carmi, Ill.) also played in singles with a victory against John Sutko from Lewis.
The men are back on the court on Wednesday in a dual match against Illinois Wesleyan. The match will be at Rochester High School, home of Fitzsimmons, at 4 p.m.
