QUINCY, IL - The University of Illinois Springfield women's tennis team picked up 13 victories at the Quincy Invitational, highlighted by senior
Faith Hook's runner-up finish in the No. 4 singles flight.
Hook (Effingham, Ill.) defeated Alex Horton of St. Ambrose, 4-6, 6-3, 11-9 to advance to the semifinals where she took down Clare O'Connor 7-6 (4-0), 6-4. In the championship match, the senior played against Division I Western Illinois' Nicol Jones and was unable to overcome her for the flight championship.
In doubles play, Hook and freshman
Jasmin Morgan (Acworth, Ga.) finished in sixth after defeating a team from Quincy. Morgan played in the No. 3 singles and lost her first match, before winning 7-5, 6-1, in the consolation bracket.
Sophomore
Jane Carter (Auckland, New Zealand) defeated Katie Drone, 6-2, 6-1, in the opening match of the Singles No. 1 flight, but dropped a decision to Courtney Lubbers of Western Illinois. In the third-place match, Carter defeated Marcilyn Rowan of Judson, 6-1, 6-2. Carter paired up with
Sharon Danquah in doubles where they defeated a pair from Judson, 8-1.
Junior
Danielle Mendoza (Waukegan, Ill.) finished fifth in the No. 5 singles flight. She dropped her opening match before picking up a 6-0, 6-1 victory against Quincy's Jessica Bossong, 6-0, 6-1, in the consolation match. She then powered through North Central's Marisa Coladipietro, 6-2, 6-3, to finish fifth.
Mendoza paired up with Kine Kleppe of Maryville in doubles play where the duo finished in second. They defeated a duo from North Central before taking on St. Ambrose and downing them 8-2. Quincy's Morgan McGinns and Anna Morrissey then took the victory in the championship match with an 8-5 win.
It was a great showing from the Prairie Stars who took just one victory at this same tournament a year ago. UIS now prepares for Truman who visits Springfield on Tuesday. First serve is set for 12 p.m. at Washington Park.
