Softball Advances with 3-0 Win against No. 10 Indianapolis

Bowlby tosses eighth shut out of the season

EAST PEORIA, Ill. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team plated the game-winning run in the third inning as the Prairie Stars went on to defeat No. 10 Indianapolis, 3-0, in the first round of the Great Lakes Valley Championship on Friday afternoon at the EastSide Center.

Sophomore pitcher Taylor Bowlby surrendered just five hits to the second-seeded Greyhounds as she tossed her eighth shut out of the season. She fanned two and with the help of the defense, only allowed five players to reach second base.

In the third, Alexa McClaughry reached base on a single to left center. She moved over on a sac bunt before coming around to score on Brittany Miller's single up the Miller.

UIS added to its lead when McClaughry once again reached on a deep single to shortstop. Lauren Hollinshead pushed McClaughry to second on another sac bunt. Then Miller stepped to the plate to belt a double and score a run before scoring on Rachel Goff's double for a 3-0 lead.

The Greyhounds looked to break the shutout in the sixth inning, but with the bases loaded and one out, UIS got the runner at home and then a ground out to second ended the inning.

Bowlby got the final three batters in order in the seventh to advance to the next round and play Lewis at 4 p.m. today.

Morgan Foley was tagged with the loss with five hits, three runs, four walks, but she did rack up 12 strike outs.
