SOMERS, Wis. - The University of Illinois Springfield softball team came out on top, 8-5, in the first game against UW-Parkside before the Rangers took game two, 7-1, on Friday afternoon at the Case Complex.
Freshman
Rachel Goff was 5-for-7 at the dish with three RBI and her first collegiate home run. Illinois Springfield moves to 22-11 on the year and 9-7 in the GLVC.
In game one, UIS tallied runs in all but the third and fourth innings. Senior
Lauren Hollinshead scored the first run of the game in the opening inning. In the second, back-to-back singles and a Ranger error allowed another run to score followed by Hollinshead single pushing the second run across.
UW-Parkside plated one in the second to cut the lead to 3-1. The next two innings were quiet for both teams until UIS got things restarted in the fifth. Goff hit a two-out two-run home run to centerfield for the 5-1 lead.
The hosts cut the lead back to two runs in the bottom of the frame before UIS pushed its lead back to five with a two-run seventh inning. Back-to-back singles pushed one across before sophomore
Amanda Gosbeth hit a sacrifice fly to make it an 8-3 game.
In the seventh, a two-run, two-out home run closed the gap to three runs, but pitcher
Alexandria Smith made the final batter foul out the end any more scoring. Smith moved to 9-5 on the season and tossed six strikeouts in the complete game. Carly Dundee was tagged with the loss with eight hits, four earned runs, six walks and eight strikeouts.
The game two was a different story for the Prairie Stars. The visitors mustered just four hits and one run in the loss. The lone run was unearned as Courtney Ellingson allowed just three total batters past first base to move to 3-10 on the year.
UIS has a quick turnaround as it travels to Lewis on Saturday. The doubleheader is set for noon in Romeoville, Ill.
