SPRINGFIELD, Ill. - Junior
Ashli King went 6-for-8 for the University of Illinois Springfield softball team, but it was not enough as it dropped a pair of games to William Jewell. The Stars fell 13-10 in the opening contest before Jewell took the 8-3 win in the second game on Friday afternoon at the Land of Lincoln Softball Complex.
King recorded a double and home run to go along with two RBI and two runs scored. Between the two teams, they combined for 45 total hits. UIS left 20 runners stranded across both games and did not connect hits at the right time.
In game one, the Prairie Stars jumped out to a 6-2 lead in after three complete. William Jewell responded with eight innings in the fourth frame and added two more in the fifth for a 12-6 advantage.
After holding the Cardinals in the sixth, Illinois Springfield added three runs to its line to close in by three. Jewell then tacked on another run in the final frame and despite having two on, UIS was only able to plate one run as a popout ended the game.
Shelby McGraw earned the win for Jewell in game one, while
Taylor Bowlby was tagged with the loss.
After closing out game one with a hitless inning,
Rachel Goff was unable to keep the momentum going in the second game as she surrendered three hits and three runs with just one out in the opening frame. Bowlby came in to toss 1.2 innings, but ran into trouble in the second. Jewell plated three more runs for a 6-0 lead after just two innings.
Alexandria Smith came in, but the damage was already done. UIS manged to push across three runs in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
UIS now stands in eighth place in the GLVC and need to get two wins against Rockhurst on Sunday to ensure a spot in the tournament. The Prairie Stars will celebrate four seniors after the games on Sunday. The doubleheader begins at 12 p.m.
