WESTFIELD, Ind. - The University of Illinois Springfield baseball team dropped two games to Indianapolis on Sunday, 5-6 and 0-11, at Grand Park.
The Prairie Stars fell in game one of the day on a walk-off home run by the Greyhounds. In the second game of the day, UIndy led from start to finish in an 11-0 rout.
Junior
Christopher Irwin (Hiram, Ga.) made his fifth start of the year for UIS in game one, but he didn't last long pitching just one inning while allowing two runs. The Prairie Stars came right back in the top of the second with a couple runs of their own. With one on and one out, junior
Jake Redlinger (Washington, Iowa) launched a home run to tie the game. It was his only hit of the day.
The teams traded runs in the fourth inning and the Prairie Stars found themselves trailing 4-3 in the sixth frame. The first two runners of the sixth reached base for UIS after a
Gabriel Acevedo (Portage, Ind.) single put runners on first and second with no outs. Freshman
Michael Rothmund (Lombard, Ill.) drove in the game-tying run with a RBI-single to left field. He finished 2-for-4 with a RBI and a run.
In the seventh, senior
Alex Bradley roped a two-out double to right center and then came around to score to go-ahead run when junior
Lance LeBaron (Coon Rapids, Minn.) singled through the left side.
UIS carried a 5-4 lead into the ninth. The Greyhounds got the leadoff runner on via a walk. Two batters later, UIndy's Daniel Lee ended the game with a two-run bomb to give the hosts a 6-5 victory.
Senior
Kyle Schildroth (Aviston, Ill.) was tabbed with the loss.
The second game of the day belonged to UIndy. Runs in the second, third and fourth innings gave the hosts a 9-0 lead from which UIS never recovered. The Greyhounds added two more in the seventh to earn the 11-0 victory.
Bradley finished with two of the team's three hits in the game. The Prairie Stars committed six errors in the game allowing five unearned UIndy runs.
The Prairie Stars are back in action tomorrow to wrap up the series with UIndy. Game time is set for 1 p.m.
